Name:

40

Profession:

Make up artist

Salary range:

$150,000-$200,000 per year would be an average for an experienced working makeup artist.  People at the top of the industry can make much more than this.

What inspired you become____________?

Since I was a kid I loved fashion magazines and anything related to beauty. My mom  was very glamorous and a combination of those things probably inspired me to become a makeup artist.

What get’s you out of bed, to do what you love?

Knowing that I will be working with different, creative people.  The people you meet are a big deal in this line of work.

What’s you favorite thing about you business/ job you like to do?

Again, is being able to express your creativity and also that it’s a job in which you are normally allowed to be yourself.

What bumps in the road did you over come to be where your at now?

I built my career by working in markets like Paris, Germany, Australia, etc, etc… Traveling is a great way to experience new things but moving around so much makes it hard to make long lasting friend relationships.

Also, the fashion business can be very discerning.  Your portfolio has to always be up to date.  Once a magazine tear sheet comes out, you better be working on the next editorial or your book is becoming old.  They pay attention to everything in a picture-don’t think clients only look at the makeup- they want to know that the clothes are of the season, that the model is current, hair is fashionable ,etc, etc, etc.  So it is a constant work in progress…

Word of advice for any Latina for follow her dream.

Anyone who wants to be a makeup artist should be ready to do a lot of “testing” meaning pictures that models do when they are first starting.  This is the best way to try things and get pictures for your portfolio.  One mistake I see is people trying to do too much when really when you are first starting you should concentrate on doing pictures where you can show that you can do pretty and clean makeup… The wild, funky stuff will come later!

So overall have patience and tenacity… and maybe an extra job at the beginning that helps you make extra money!

I also recommend you to try to assist another makeup artist when possible.

Where did you go to learn, your trade?

I went to Paris to go to Fashion School, once there I found out that  I loved Makeup and starting working on shoots.  I did attend a makeup school in Toronto, Canada called “Complections”

I also assisted a few famous Makeup artists in New York and Paris.

I believe in education and always attend seminars and classes to update my skills… There’s always something new to learn!

Words of wisdom….

I feel that there’s a need for Latinos in the fashion industry.  Latinas are a huge deal with Advertisers right now and it is a niche market that will welcome you, know that they are ready for you and to me tenacity and a positive attitude is the best advice.
