I am currently on the diet ride, yeah, I know… I am such a cliché. Ok, but guess what? I learned something today that I wanted to share. Brown rice is not only better for you, but it's better for the environment than white rice too.
¿Porque? Rice goes through a variety of processes. First, I will explain the process from brown rice…
- The seeds are run through a rice huller/husker for milling to remove the outer grain husks. After this process, you're left with brown rice. ¡Que facil y natural!
Now for the white rice...
- The germ and the inner husk (bran) is removed.
- The grain is then polished using glucose or talc, which removes nutrients that are then sometimes reintroduced via synthetic sources. This is called “fortified white rice”. Yeah, they put in FAKE stuff to “fortify” the rice.
The same type of thing happens in brown bread vs. white bread scenario.
Some of the nutrients removed are Vitamin E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folacin, Potassium, Magnesium, Iron and over a dozen other nutrients. You also get much less fiber.
So why is it “greener”? Well, the less processing of a food, the less energy required. In addition, where do you think the fake stuff is made? Yes in laboratories and factories from a variety of chemicals!
Of course, brown rice takes some getting used to, but doesn’t everything that is good for you take some getting used to? Ooh, also the brown bags the rice comes are really cool to use for other things later.
Aren’t you glad you learned something new today? Me too, thanks greenlivingtips.com for this useful information. I feel smarter already… oh and thinner.
