My childhood, much like most Latino children in the United States, was spent watching my mom, up before the sun, making tortillas de harina para ‘el lonche’ and then through my sleepy eyes she’d disappear and wasn’t seen until 4:00pm. I am a first generation college student, daughter of padres campesinos inmigrantes who always made sure my siblings and I knew that there was a life we were made for that was beyond the one we were currently living. A hope was instilled in me, much like the hope that the non-profit organization Para Los Niños strives to instill in the children throughout Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.

Social worker, Tanya Tull founded Para Los Niños in 1980 with the goal of bringing un futuro brillante para los niños. Currently operating 28 sites and serving more than 4,000 familias Para Los Niños has programs that directly educate children and youth. The organization also provides social and mental health services that help families create safe, nurturing, and healthy homes. All of their services have proved to effectively, con la educación que proveen, bring children out of poverty to promote self-sufficiency and help them overcome the many barriers they face.

Gracias a Dios my parents had access to resources that helped educate my sisters, mi hermano y a mí. Without programs like Para Los Niños some niños aren’t exposed to the opportunities the world offers.

A child in California is abused or neglected every 4 minutes! Become part of the solution, for yourself, your family, para los niños. Visit the organization’s website to read in detail about the many resources they offer as well as ways you can join the cause.
