Nike recently invited me to Vancouver, Canada, to a meet and greet of the USA Women’s Olympians, for the 2010 Winter Games. Out of the group of women one stuck out the most, Jennifer Rodriguez. It was amazing to find out that she is a Speed Skater. Have you ever heard such a thing, a Latina doing a sport like that?

The minute she stepped on the ice she knew that was to become her passion. Jennifer was an acclaimed inline skater before switching to ice speed skating.  Jennifer became the first Cuban- American to win a medal in the Winter Olympic Games. Jennifer competed in the 1998 Nagano Olympics and at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City. At the 2002 Salt Lake City games she took the Bronze medal for doing the 100om and the 1500m. She retired soon after the 2006 Olympics, but like any Latina she fought her way back in the game once again.

Stuff you didn’t know about Jennifer:

  • She placed fourth in the 300m at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano.
  • Her nickname is “J-Rod”.
  • She’s a total World War II buff, due to her father.
  • She loves jet skiing when she has time off from training.
  • She has won more than 50 International World Cup medals.
  • She is regarded to be the most successful speed skater in American history.

Jennifer is dedicating this Olympic season to the memory of her mother, who passed away in June to a long fight with Breast Cancer.

Here at Soy Fashionista, we wish her the best of luck!
