Dia De Los Muertos

I have always heard about this awesome holiday, but never knew much about it.  Then, I began doing research and found that many people travel to their hometowns in Mexico and many other Latin American countries to celebrate this day.  I was also very surprised to hear that Spain has many festivals and parades on that day.

I always imagined the skeleton faces and the big, bright flowers and the paper streamers, but now I find that it is much bigger than that, it a huge holiday.  November 1st is known as Día De Los Inocentes or All Saints Day.  November 2nd is Día De Los Muertos or Día De Los Difuntos

These days are believed, by many, to be the days when the dead can easily visit the living.  So for a chicken like me, this means either I party with the rest of them or go hide in the corner from fear of actually seeing any of my old relatives, sorry Tío Nene and Tío Carlos.  So I have decided to party!

It is too short notice to travel for me, but for those of you that can, take a map of Mexico throw a dart at it and visit that state.  You will find a festivity ranging from age old traditions of visiting relative’s tombs, to building alters and arches to welcome the spirits of the relatives, to parades.  Depending on the area you visit, you will always find something different going on.

So grab the skeletons in your closet and let’s go party at the cemetery!
