Mariachis, Conjuntos y Banda’s play as we walk through La Plaza in Tamazula, Jalisco. I had never experienced anything like this. It was El 16 de Septiembre and everyone was celebrating El Grito: Mexico’s Independence Day.
It all started 298 years ago when father Hidalgo, Ignacio Allende and Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez rang the bell of his little church, calling everyone to fight for liberty. The Independence War lasted 10 years. Of course Mexico finally won and that’s why every 16 de Septiembre a reenactment is played at all plazas.
Several days before El 16, the whole country is decorated in the colors of the flag: green, white and red, along with bright lighted decorations. Live bands play as the men, dressed as Charros and women, dressed in indigenous dresses, walk through La Plaza and enjoy delicious food and Ponche , a tradicional drink.
The governor arrives at la Plaza around 11:00 pm on the 15th and delivers his speech, “El Grito”. The bell is rung, fireworks go off and the crowd goes wild, chanting and making as much noise as possible. If you haven’t already experienced this, I highly recommend it. It was an unforgettable experience.
QUE VIVA MEXICO!
