Posadas en el Desierto

“En el nombre del cieeelllo” was part of the verse I remember singing at our family posadas. One thing I admired about my dad’s family is that they always wanted to keep tradition alive. My cousins and I grew up with the memories of the posadas leading up to Christmas Eve. A posada is done in the neighborhoods in Mexico, begins on December 16, and concludes on the 24th. Everyone gathers at a different house for nine consecutive nights and images of Mary & Joseph are carried while all join in singing the posada song.
The song is a reenactment of when Joseph and Mary are looking for room in the inn. On the final day, once the song is sung and the reply is to allow them in a huge celebration takes place. Food and candies followed by piñatas are all part of the fiesta. If you are not able to host all nine nights choose one night and host your very own posada to bring back the tradition make it a family event and have everyone bring something and participate to maintain the tradition alive!
