Mexican Halloween Mask

Why is it that when it comes to racial or cultural jokes, it’s funny when it pertains to you, but as soon as someone from outside the circle says something we take it offensively. I am the first to admit to it because something like the phrase “beaner” is a word taken lightly, but as soon as someone out side my circle of comfort uses the word “beaner” I am like what did he/she just say, because I will get crazy. I remember one day I was having dinner at a Mexican restaurant and there was a non-Hispanic girl sitting one table over and she spoke out loudly and said, “How was I suppose to know, I don’t speak Mexican.” That was so annoying and felt that she was being ignorant, but if I was to have said it in a jokingly manner within my circle it would have been super funny.
Well in the spirit of Halloween many people don’t like to dress up as monsters and evil creatures, they prefer something funny or unthought-of. For example, a new costume out now is the illegal alien, and many, especially in the Hispanic community were offended by this. There are two forms of this costume: one is an alien mask in an orange jail jumpsuit and a fake green card, the other is just an alien mask with a cap and a mustache. In some ways, this could be offensive, but what about the Indian costume, or the priest and nun costume? Some stores have removed this illegal alien costume but others say it’s all in good fun, and shouldn’t be taken so seriously. What do you think?
