¿Que? Te casa y ¡no es Latino!

Lista para casarte and everything is going according to plan. You’re in love and your heart and mind agree, for the first time, that this person is the one who will make you happy for the rest of your life. No one knows you better than him and no one could possibly be better. You’ve both decided to take the next step, which leads me to this. What if he is not a Latino? ¿Que ? ¿Estas segura ? Are you ready to deal with all the people who will judge and criticize something that is so perfect? For me, when asked the answer was simple: I waited my whole life to find the missing link, the person who completes me and wants the best for me. Of course, I’m ok with it! With that being said how do you deal with trying to make your family accept him? If I hear, one more person ask, “Hey Christie, is it true what they say?  Once you go black you never go back!” Me voy a volver loca

I come from a large Mexican family and I am the first to openly date an African American. When I first met him, I knew that he sparked something in me that was different. We talked for hours and couldn’t wait ‘till the next time we spoke. I never once thought, “What will my parents say?” Our hearts do not distinguish race. You can imagine when I saw the commercials for the new film “Our Family Wedding” Starring America Ferrera and Lance Gross how excited I was!  A movie I could definitely identify with. As I sat there and watched the movie it was a perfect depiction of two families from different races coming together to celebrate the marriage of their children. Both families wanting to keep intact the integrity of their roots while struggling to come to an agreement.  I was pleased to see how much of our culture was incorporated into the storyline. All the religious traditions like the lazo, and arras .  The father and daughter relationship between Carlos Mencia’s character and America Ferrera’s was reminiscent of mine with my father.

For those of you Latinas in love or engaged with someone out of your race. I understand how challenging this can be, but remind yourselves that love has no color! It comes to us when we least expect and from who we least expect. Embrace it! The way I see it, life is extremely precious and too short to not be with the one you love porque your tío doesn’t want you to be with a negro. ‘Ta loco el tío, mientras no me mantenga no tienen derechos a decirme con quien me enamore!
