When we think of travel safety tips, we usually think of dangers at an airport or losing your travel documents.  But, what about all those road trips?  Well, here I am again, ready to save the day, or in this case, the night.

If you plan on driving after the sun goes down, then read the following tips I found on “Road and Travel” magazine, to make sure you arrive safely to your destination. Remember, traffic death rates are three times greater at night.

1. Use your lights courteously - Turn your headlights on one hour before sunset and keep them on until one hour after sunrise.  In fog, use low beam headlights.

2. Make it easy for others to see you - Be sure all exterior vehicle lights work properly.

3. Avoid glare – Don’t look directly at oncoming headlights.

4. Keep all windows and headlights clean - Dirty windows can increase glare.

5. Increase your following distance - Increasing your distance by four to five seconds will give you more time to respond.

6. Regulate speed - Driving too fast is more dangerous after dark than during the day because of decreased visibility.

7. Prevent fatigue - Night driving can be tiring, so ensure good ventilation inside the vehicle and take frequent breaks to give your eyes a chance to recover. Can anybody say café???

8. Use vehicle mirrors to your advantage -
Exterior mirrors that are properly aligned not only reduce blind spots, they also reduce glare from vehicles behind you.

So, safe driving!  Oh, and my own little driving tip: don’t put on any eye makeup while driving.  Not only will it be a diversion, but it is illegal AND most importantly….it won’t look as good as if you did it at home.  After all we do want to look fabulosas, right?
