Thanks to the French, our panaderias were inspired to create bolillos and from the bolillo came the torta (Mexican sandwiches). Tortas are great with jamon, carne asada, carnitas, pollo, and anything else you want to put into them. I look forward to the holidays when we have leftover ham, turkey, picadillo, or papas. Ay, Dios Santo! That’s good eating! Tortas can be layered with so many different things; I will go three step-by- step on a torta de jamon but you can do them a tu gusto!

What you will need

  • 1 Bolillo
  • 1 tbsp Frijoles
  • Lettuce
  • 3 slices of tomato
  • 1 tbsp Mayonesa

  • 1 Avocado sliced
  1. Slice the bolillo in half and scoop out some of the bread to create a pocket.
  2. Spread mayonesa lightly and then spread frijoles.
  3. Next place slices of ham
  4. Followed by the cheese and tomato
  5. Then come the avocado slices
  6. And lastly the lettuce
  7. Y sas! Instant torta!

Quick Tip**

If you would like your bread toasted, use a saucepan. Slice bolillo, spread some butter on it lightly and place on the saucepan, turning over until toasted.
