Huaraches not only go on your feet, but also in your mouth! ¿Qué? In the 1930’s a restaurant owner named Carmen Gomez created the first “Huarache”. It is derived from the shape of the masa, which resembles a huarache or sandal. They can be compared to sopes, but are different in shape.
What you’ll need:
- 2 cups dehydrated masa flour (corn tortilla flour)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 3/4 cups caldito de pollo
- 1 cup of frijoles fritos
Preparation:
1. In a bowl, stir the masa flour, baking powder, salt, and caldito until the masa holds well
2. Roll masa into oblong shapes and refrigerate for about 2 hours
3. En un sartén caliente place masa in and heat for about 3 minutes, until brown.
4. Spread the frijoles over the Huarache
5. Then, top huaraches with lechuga or repollo, salsa, cheese, and sour cream
QUICK TIP:
Some stores carry Huarache Masa premade
