Cuidado con la musica! You don’t really want to get stuck with a crazy mariachi playing at your wedding! I can just see it now: a group of friends that play bingo with abuelita, in their 1970’s-inspired mariachi suits, looking like a group of singing tamales doing their rendition of “Amor Eterno”. Suddenly, it registers this is not what you wanted for your wedding. Don’t worry. There are decisions that can be made prior to your big day to make sure “Mariachi Los Tamales” is not the only choice.

When making your entertainment arrangements, you have to determine whether you want live music or a D.J. Having the option of both can be taken into consideration, depending on your budget. Entertainers charge by the hour and consecutively, so when one is resting and the other is playing, the clock is still running.

Start by recalling events where you enjoyed the entertainment. Collect contact information and ask the person who hired them what they thought of the performance. If you have the option of watching them perform, enjoy some time with the future hubby and check them out. Read over all contracts in great detail and ask as many questions as possible. The music selection should be divided into four parts: the Ceremony, Pre-meal, Reception, and Party Time.

  • Ceremony- If you are having a religious ceremony, consider consulting with the church on organists or Mariachis they are familiar with. Some churches only allow musicians who they have worked with in the past, while some don’t allow musicians at all.
  • Premeal- During this time of the night, solo entertainers (i.e. pianists, harp players, or light music) is great while people wait.
  • Reception- This is the moment when you make your grand entrance as the Mr.  & Mrs. My favorite of all time for the section of the night is a Mariachi or Trio
  • Party time – There is no limit to this section of the night. Create a playlist ahead of time whether you chose to have “D.J. Wedding Bells” play or “La Band Boda”. Make sure they interact with the guests. If you hire a D.J., ask about the lighting options along with other things they can do. I have seen some D.J.’s equipped with projectors and fog machines.

At the end of the night (and for years to come), you want family and friends to say they enjoyed themselves and had a fabulous night in honor of your love!
