La tradición del día de los muertos is a huge celebration in the Latino culture. It is a time of remembrance for those dear to us that we have lost. The celebration focuses on recollecting the individual’s favorites such as foods, drinks, music etc. In some areas of the states many gather at local cemeteries and make altars at the gravesite. This is a very important tradition to maintain and to continue to pass down through generations.

In the area where I live there aren’t any planned social gatherings to commemorate this day. If you have a similar situation I suggest hosting a celebration in your own home. Here are some things that you can do to decorate:

  • Tell all invitees to bring a framed photo of a loved one who has passed. Use these photos to decorate your party area.
  • Have them bring their loved ones’ favorites to place around the photos.
  • Use plenty of candles! You can use plain colored ones or the ones with the santos on them.
  • Make a calavera stencil and trace it on a paper bag. Using an X-Acto® knife cut it out and you will have Luminary bags to decorate the walk way and the outdoor area.
  • On a packaging label have everyone write a special message to their loved ones and place one on every luminary as a memorial.
  • Create banner flags with Calavera cut outs and adorn your indoor and outdoor areas with these.
  • Talk to your friends about their ideas and ways they have celebrated this day and incorporate it into your celebration.

If El Día De los Muertos isn’t coming to you, you create it!

¡Que siga la tradición!
