Green Burials

Once again, I will be the bearer of relatively morbid news.  Let’s talk about death again.  A sad occasion, I know, yet a very important subject.

As I sit here and think about this story, I begin to wonder, why did it take so long for us to consider this?  I mean, we do worry about what goes into our soil.  They tell us not to dump our vehicle oil into your backyard, not to bury trash around your house, YUCK…but we rarely hear about the damage we are doing to the planet when we bury a casket full of chemicals into our soil.  I apologize; I have loved ones that have passed away too.  But, it’s the truth.  The caskets are not biodegradable and the embalming fluids are not a natural element of our planet.

As I read about these new “green” cemeteries, I got the feeling that they are beautiful places to have your remains buried in.  They are usually called “preserves”.   As your remains are reunited with the earth and get recycled into new life.  You can plant native trees, shrubs and flowers in your loved one's honor and help promote habitat restoration.

Also, these types of burials are less costly!  “Que?,” say your frugal family members, as they all of a sudden pay attention.  Yes, as you don’t have to pay for a concrete vaults, pricey caskets or embalming fluids.
