Remember my “no-water-on-earth” nightmare?  ¡Pues, a mí no se me olvida!  I am so paranoid about water conservation that I found these great tips that I had not seen before and I thought I would share them with you!

  • Never put water down the drain when there may be another use for it, put it in your plantas or clean something.
  • Check to make sure, your home is leak-free.  Read your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used.  If the meter does not read exactly the same, there is a leak.
  • If your faucet drips, you can expect to waste 2,700 galones de agua per year.  So check your faucets.
  • Your toilet tank can leak without you ever realizing it.  Add some food coloring to the water inside your tank and walk away.  If there is any of that color inside your actual toilet seat area, then you have a leak.  Fix it right away.  Oh and flush it quickly because your toilet will stain.
  • Take shorter showers. Replace your showerhead with an ultra-low-flow version. Some units are available that allow you to cut off the flow without adjusting the water temperature knobs. Ooh, FUN TIP: take showers with your galán and save even more water.
  • Operate automatic dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are fully loaded or properly set the water level for the size of load you are using.
  • Insulate your water pipes. You'll get hot water faster plus avoid wasting water while it heats up.  If you can’t insulate then capture that first water in a bucket to use at a later time.

I can’t emphasize the importance of water conservation enough.  It is a scary thought to lose this valuable resource!  Oh, one more tip, I couldn’t find on any other website: take out your full feather headdress, do a rain dance and ask the gods for some rain!
