“I want to be one less!” You may have noticed the commercial on tv or advertised in magazines. The new “cervical cancer vaccine” called Guardasil works by protecting against four strains of HPV, two of which cause 70 percent of all cervical cases.

The shot is administered in 3 shots given over the course of 6 months.  It is recommended for girls as early 11 or 12 and as late as 26. Even if you're daughter is not sexually active at age 11, it is still recommended to get the vaccine to protect her in the future. In my case, the vaccine was covered by my medical insurance. However, if you don't have medical insurance you can expect to pay anywhere between $100-$150 per shot (3 in total). If $300 for a vaccine is too steep for you, then look into low cost clinics and Planned Parenthood who can offer the vaccine at a much more affordable price (or in some cases, free). Also keep in mind that the vaccine does not protect against other STDs, so remember to always use condoms. I urge you to get this vaccine and spread the word and take the necessary steps to protect yourself and your daughters.
