Is Coffee Bad for You?

Now that I’m back to the student life, I’m picking up my coffee habit again. How else will I get through 200 pages of dense text book readings? On average my classes are almost 3 hours long, so I also like to take a little coffee break between classes. So, how much is too much coffee? Different studies suggest that 2-3 cups a day is fine, but 4-8 is where you get in trouble. Coffee definitely has its pros and cons and, in order to stay on the positive side, you have to remember that moderation is the key. For example, instead of drinking a 16 oz. cup in the morning and feeling the crash a few hours later, instead try spreading it out throughout the day. Also make sure to drink plenty of water because coffee is a natural diuretic. One last note: mints! Coffee breath is the worst, and that’s bad for you and your colleagues.

Pros:

  • Mental performance
  • Alertness
  • Attention
  • Wakefulness

Physical endurance and stamina

Cons:

  • heavy consumption of boiled coffee elevates cholesterol levels
  • Caffeine temporarily raises blood pressure, which can be dangerous to those with chronic hypertension
  • Caffeine is a mild diuretic and may increase the risk of dehydration
  • Caffeine can make it more difficult for those with type 2 diabetes to control their blood sugar levels.
