Take Your Vacation!

You may be tempted to skip your vacation and work throughout the year, because your employer either pays you out at the end of the year, or you need the money and can’t afford to take an unpaid vacation. DANGER! Yes, Danger! You may be causing more harm by not taking a break away from work and all of your other daily routines. Vacations help you get rejuvenated. It is in your interest to escape and relax for a few days so you can return to work at your full capacity.Your employer will appreciate that!
If you are tempted to skip your vacation due to financial worries, I recommend the following:
- Plan leisure activities near home. Staying at home and gardening, bike riding, hiking, visiting a nearby National Park, or whatever you enjoy doing doesn’t have to be costly if you stay in your town or nearby.
- Try home swapping! You can swap with someone you know in another city, or use an online service, such as homexchange.com. You will experience getting out of town into a new or favorite city without the expense of a hotel or resort lodging.
- Put aside funds each week for your vacation. Even $50 a week can add up and make your trip happen.
- Be a tourist in your own city and get out there! I recommend going to your local book store and looking what travel books recommend to do in your city or the nearest big city to you. My favorite is the eyewitness travel guide published by DK books.
- Create an oasis in your own backyard or patio and finally get through that summer book you’ve been meaning to finish. To get ideas on how to create that oasis visit sites from retailers that give you the tools to recreate your spaces such as Home Depot, Lowes, Pottery Barn and Pier 1 Imports.
We are programmed to believe that free time is worthless, but vacation time is as important as watching your cholesterol and getting exercise. Stop planning and thinking about it and just take the time off to enjoy your well deserved vacation. Think of it as “doctor’s orders”.
