“Mardi Gras” is French for “Fat Tuesday”. This big fiesta and celebration takes place on February 24, 2009. One of the most popular destinations for celebrating Mardi Gras is New Orleans, Louisiana. Sabias? The main tradition began as a way to celebrate the last day of feasting before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.
New Orleans, LA has been celebrating Mardi Gras since the 1730’s but it wasn’t until the 1830’s that street celebrations full of maskers with carriages and on horseback paraded around to celebrate Mardi Gras. This beautiful city has plenty of experience and has perfected this party that includes music, parades, picnics, floats and excitement. Now, that’s what I call a party!
On this day, you are sure to find all businesses shut down, the public walking everywhere and the potential to meet new friends. People dress in crazy costumes, wear masks and during the parade trinkets are thrown (especially beads) into the crowd. Events continue into the evening for more celebration in the French Quarter, especially on Bourbon Street, where you are sure to find a great fiesta!
Don’t forget to collect beads during the parade so you can have a souvenir to bring home or throw at someone you may want to catch the attention of!
Time to fiesta!
