Being my parents’ first born child in the United States definitely had a huge impact on me in regards to the importance of education. Since both of my parents had to drop out of school at a young age to help support their families, their education stopped at the junior high level.  As they got older, they continued to work hard to provide a good life my brother and me. Although they never got a chance to go back to school, they instilled in us how imperative education was and constantly reminded us by teaching us to dream big and to believe that anything is possible. However, they always made it a point to let us know that in order to do obtain our dreams and goals, we needed have an education.

I was the first in my family to graduate not only high school, but also college. It was such a proud moment for both my family and me to be able to receive my diploma and show my parents that all their hard work and sacrifice paid off.  I do my best to try and set a good example by being a strong role model for my nephews, just like my parents did for me.

Latism has become a great resource in helping spread the word on an innovative new project that really excites me: Univision’s “Es El Momento” (“The Moment Is Now”). This has created outlets to show how important it is that our children have role models and will encourage them to continue their education and follow their dreams. It also teaches parents the keys points to the success of their children’s education, and to create a great platform for them to build off for their futures.

Univision searched  for the most amazing role models they could find and came across some incredible participants: Indy Car series race car driver and engineer, Milka Duno, composer/ lyricist and Tony Award-winner, Lin-Manuel Miranda,  NASA astronaut and engineer, José Hernández,  and award-winning novelist, Sandra Cisneros, just to name a few.

Congrats on their efforts and they continuous strides in empowering young Latinos to become future roles models!
