Remembering the Qween of TexMex

This March 31st marks the 14th anniversary of when the Tejano music industry lost their reina.  I know we all remember when it happened and how every store was selling her CD’s and vendors every where selling shirts with her picture on them. Selena was a legend, her songs are still heard on the radio, and to this day, her “Baila esta Cumbia” and “La Carcacha” can still get people dancing at any party!

In 1995, her life was tragically taken from her by a person she trusted and did business with. That year on April 12th (her birthday), the former president, (and then governor of Texas), George W. Bush, declared that day “Selena Day”  as a tribute to the “Mexican Madonna”. By 1997, a movie of her life had been filmed and released and her fans got to see her perform again. Jennifer Lopez did an amazing job playing Selena and began to elevate her acting career from there.

. Tejano music is a fusion of polkas, country-western and traditional Mexican folk music that is sung in Spanish. Selena, along with her group, Los Dinos, combined tejano, Spanish pop, cumbia, with a little bit of techno and funk to develop a sound unlike anything around back then, winning them fans all over the United States, Latin America and all over the world. She had enough soul to make funky beats collaborate just right with the cumbias and her voice could hit every note perfectly as it joined in with the accordion and the trumpet of the mariachi.

In the summer of 1995, her crossover English album debuted, and sadly, she wasn’t here to see her album go straight to the top. The album “Dreaming of You” was #1 on the Billboard 200, making her the first Hispanic singer to ever make that spot! On its release date, her album sold over 175,00o copies, making it the most ever sold for a female pop singer. Her grave spot is a highly visited touristic attraction and the life-sized statue of her in Corpus Christi is also a tribute to her. Her legacy lives on as her hits continue to still be heard and appreciated, and you can guarantee that we will all sing along to her music.
