Mala Rodriguez-Being Bad Never Looked So Good

Once upon a time, a little Spanish girl fell in love with Hip Hop not only because it made reference to the life she had experienced, but also because it was something completely new and amazing to her. She grew up watching breakers breakdance in the streetsof Sevilla, Spain and would write her own Hip Hop lyrics, dubbing herself:  “La Mala”. All I can say is that the name suits her quite well. She’s baaaaaad, in an amazing way.

Maria Rodriguez first got attention for her flamenco-influenced rhymes thanks to her collaborations with already established Hip Hop crews in Spain’s music scene. Her rapid fire rhyme spitting and introspective lyrics soon singled her out as the next big thing to come out of Espana. However, as she progressed and became a little more main stream, she lost a bit of her edge and mellowed out…or so they say. I still find her combination of adlibbing, Spanish accent and pro-women flows over sumptuous beats to be grimy as hell. Just listen to her song “Mala Suerte Con El” with Calle 13 and be prepared to be blown away (be warned, though, this song is a little too dirty for ninas inocentes like yours truly!). Most recently, Ms. Rodriguez performed the song “Eres Para Mi” with famed rockera Julieta Venegas for Venegas’ MTV Unplugged special. In my opinion, Mala KILLED it with her skills and looked amazing doing it. Much respect to Julieta, but, mami, you got served!

Everyone’s always complaining that women aren’t focused on in the Hip Hop scene like they should be. Mala went and stomped out her own path and crawled over the male-driven industry while doing so...in a tutu and rubber boots, to top it off.  Check her out at: http://www.malarodriguez.com.
