What inspired you become a poet?
When I first stated writing, it was simply to deal with my personal issues, to relieve stress so I never thought of sharing my work with the public. However, when I started to... I realized that people connected to my words and others started telling me that my words inspire them in a positive way to want to speak about their issues. So at the end of the day.. people inspire me, because we all have a story to tell and I know that many do not want to talk about their lives and I want to become that voice and express it in a poetic rhythm.
What get’s you out of bed, to do what you love?
I feel that I owe something to my community, specially to our communities future...our youth. I want to talk about my personal issues that I had to face and show our youth that regardless of what we go through in life we can turn our life in a positive way. Because of the things I’ve been through, it has made me appreciate life more and because of that I wake up every morning being grateful and I want to pass that energy around my people.
What’s your favorite thing about your job you like to do?
When I perform, I leave a part of me on stage and when I see that I get a reaction from people, I know that I have touched their hearts... and to know that they are taking a part of me with them makes me happy. It’s a shared energy between the audience and I, that allows me to feed off their energy... that’s electrifying!
What bumps in the road did you over come to be where your at now?
I went through a dark period of my life were I endangered my life and others with drugs. It was a period in my life were I disconnected myself from my family and spirituality. At some point I hit rock bottom and realized that I didn’t want to die without a purpose. To re-evaluate myself and surroundings was a huge challenge, even more so when I started performing and had an epiphany that if I ever went to the life style I had, I would lose the one thing I love the most: my poetry.
Word of advice for any Latina to follow her dream.
Don’t ever let traditional standards, religion, economic status and negative force keep you from achieving your goals. If you love something and have the talent to support what you want to do... then do it! There’s always going to be someone telling you otherwise, if you listen to their negativity, then you are just like them... scared to take a risk and see what else is out there in life other than what we already know. Write your goal, focus and execute ... stay determined and never lose track of who you are and where you came from.
Where did you go to learn, your trade?
I started writing at the age of 14 years and started performing when I turned 26 years. During this whole time I wrote a lot of ‘stuff’. I call it ‘stuff’ ‘cause I never thought it was poetry until my friends kept pushing me to believe in myself. So I guess I’m self-taught... who knows, maybe ‘poetry’ chose me... ha!
Words of wisdom….
Regardless of where we come from, what color is on our skin, what language we speak, we all have the same goal in mind: succeed, empower and love. Instead of looking at what color of skin we have, we need to look at the color that runs through our veins....red for passion, red for love, red for life. So remember, you stand alone because you want to...when in reality all you have to do is unite with someone else and be stronger and make a difference.
