My good friend, Daisy, just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Kalea. Her birth inspired me to create a mini tutu for Daisy’s princess-in-the-making. Kalea’s first tutu comes complete with a matching onesie and headband. It was very easy to make and requires very little needle and thread action.

What you will need

  • 18 inches of ¾-inch elastic
  • 1 3/8 inch stretch lace elastic
  • (22) 1 ½ x 12 inch strips of tulle
  • 12 flower embellishments
  • Aleene’s tacky glue
  • Glue gun
  • Needle and thread
  • 36 inches of satin ribbon

Tutu

  1. Take the ¾ elastic piece measures around the child’s waist leaving one inch to sew it together.
  2. Next, open a strip of tulle and place the center over the back of the elastic. Pull tulle around to the front and tie snuggly. Depending on the length of your tulle, you may want to keep it folded for a shorter tutu. If you keep it folded it also look full.
  3. Once completed, you can add some personalization (as I did to Kalea’s tutu) and glue a satin ribbon on both sides as a trim to the top.
  4. Using the tacky glue, I took six flowers and placed them in various spots on the tutu.
  5. In the center, take a 12 inch by 1 ½ inch strip and fold it over, back-and-forth like a fan, tying a little piece of tulle and gluing a flower in the center.
  6. Take this and glue it in the center of the tutu on top of the satin ribbon.

For the headband

  1. Take the stretch lace elastic and measure around the baby’s head, leaving half an inch to overlap and sew closed.
  2. Take a 6-inch by 1-inch strip of tulle and fold over back and forth. Tie a small slip of tulle and glue a flower in the center.
  3. Sew the tulle flower on top of the lace elastic right where you sewed it.

For the Onesie

  1. I took two flowers and glued them to the front of the onesie, using Aleene’s tacky glue.
