El dia de los muertos is fast approaching. One of my favorite things to do for this celebration is making Calaveras de azucar. You can paint them and add embellishments depending on how you want them to look. It takes less than hour to prepare and can also be stored in the refrigerator to be used at a later date. It’s a fun activity that is easy and can be done with the children.
You will need:
2 cups powdered sugar
1 egg white
1 tablespoon of light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
1/3 cup of corn starch
Blue, green, red and yellow food coloring
1 fine paintbrush
1) Begin by sifting powdered sugar.
2) In a clean bowl, mix egg white, syrup and vanilla.
3) Then mix sugar into wet mixture gradually, using your fingers until the mixture forms a ball.
4) Wrap tightly in plastic and refrigerate until ready to use.
5) When ready to shape, always use plenty of corn starch.
6) Lastly, when the figures are dry, color them and add embellishments as you wish.
